It’s that time of year again. Time for the northerly winds to blow and the snow to begin to fall. Time to break out the old Bing Crosby albums and grab a mug of pumpkin spice coffee. For some of you, this might be a little early to start celebrating the season, I mean it’s only a few days into November. But, I’ve been waiting for this all year long. The leaves are falling along with the temperature, the colors are changing from vibrant greens to dull oranges, browns, and yellows.
It’s the most wonderful, most magical time of the year. You can walk down the street singing “Jingles Bells” or “Sleigh Ride” and random strangers will join in. It’s the season of joy, the season of giving, the season of new life and rebirth. It’s winter. It’s thanksgiving. It’s Christmas. You can finally break out the scarves, gloves, and classy coats. Of course, I do that all year long, people just look at me strange. But it’s the time of year when peace on earth seems like it might actually be real.It is the season for a reason. Not just a holiday for peace on earth, but a time to celebrate the Savior’s birth. One night, 2,000+ years ago, a baby was born who would forever change the world.
God’s love is the reason for the season, Christ’s blood is the reason we give thanks, God’s Son is the reason we celebrate. Not only is Jesus the reason for the season, but it is the season for a reason. We celebrate His birth by showing good will toward men and making the Christmas season the most beneficent of all holidays.
Christmas to me, well-, it’s something that happens inside of you. It starts with a miraculous change of heart, as if a single snowflake could cascade from its heavenly home and freeze an entire lake with a single touch of its icy skin; the miracle of Christmas joy is one that a writer dreams of explaining. So many metaphors could be used to describe it and yet all of the fall short: for Christmas is about love, and there is no explanation for it.
Good will toward men is the great commission: go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. We preach with our word ac and with our lives, the Bible says that they will know us by our love. Christmas truly is the time of year when we try our best to be like our master. God is loved therefore we should love others, even as Christ love us, with a desperate love that was worth dying for.
As we give thanks, as we enjoy the festivities, the chill of winter, the warmth of friendship, the cheer of family and friends together, and the joy that this time of year brings, remember what it’s all about. ‘Tis the season for a reason, and the reason is love.
LEFTOVER THOUGHTS:
Now then, having dispensed with the formalities, plaids are in for November this year. Pumpkin spice seems to be the raging craze, and against all odds corduroys may yet make a comback… I’m not too hopeful about that last one. Stay classy all, this is the best time of year for it.
